He holds a Master's degree in Physical Chemistry from the University of Nancy 1, France, a Master's degree in Technology & Innovation Management and a PhD in Science & Technology Policy both from the University of Sussex, UK. He is involved in the teaching of Innovation Management, Design Thinking & Management, Entrepreneurship, Collaborative Project, Strategy & Planning, Foresight & Strategy, Entrepreneurial Funding & Finance, Corporate Governance, Understanding Business Failure, Business Models of Creative Industry, as well as Qualitative & Quantitative Techniques in Business & Management Research.

Dr. Surya Mahdi's research interest is broadly around the issues surrounding the complex mechanisms of developing, collecting and/or converting necessary and critical knowledge and assets by any innovating agents such as Entrepreneurs, Start-Ups or even Firms to create their very first innovation outcome such as the very first workable prototypes or the very first Minimum Viable Products.

Surya had been involved in the teaching of “Society and the Assessment of Technology”; “Technology Foresight and Forecasting”; “Science & Public Policy: Formulation, Implementation and Evaluation”; “Business & Management skills for Engineers and Scientists”; “Technology & Innovation Strategy”; “Business & Management Research”; “Innovation Management”; “New Venture Creation”; “Organizational Behaviour”; “Project & Program Management” at various institutions such as The Ministry of research & Technology of Indonesia (Indonesia), University of Indonesia (Indonesia), CRP-University of Wollongong (Australia), University of Sussex (UK), UWE (UK) and the Performance Leaders Consulting (UAE).

Until recently, Dr. Surya Mahdi has collaborated with academic colleagues from other disciplines and across different continents such as from AAAT, Indonesia; University of Wollongong, Australia; University of Sussex; Cranfield School of Management; Imperial College London; University of Cambridge; University of Liverpool; and Ecole Polytechnic Valencia, Spain. His research has been published in internationally peer reviewed journals such as: International Journal of Innovation Management, Industrial and Corporate Change, Research Policy, Technovation and Scientometrics.
